THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/turkey

08/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - A delegation from the European Parliament, comprising Cohn-Bendit (German Green elected in France), Lamassoure (French, EPP), Ceyhun (German, Socil-Democrat), Swoboda (Austrian Socialist), Gahler (German Christian-Democrat), Van Hecke (Belgian, EPP), Belder (Dutch, EDD) and Frahm (Danish, GUE) paid a visit to Turkey and launched an appeal for a swift settlement to the conflict in the prisons. The delegation, which visited Ankara and Istanbul had talks with the Minister of Justice and different politicians, hoped for an acceleration in the criminal and prison reform process. In a press release, they stress that the detainees now recognize that the living conditions in the new F-type prisons are better than in the old detention centres, but insisted with the Turkish authorities for strengthened dialogue with prisoners. The delegation is also in favour of a relaxation of visiting conditions, as well as isolation regimes, and hope that efforts will be made to improve the possibilities offered to detainees in preparing their trials.
