Brussels, 20/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - European Parliament President Nicole Fontaine will make an official visit to Mexico on 25 April where she will meet President Vincent Fox, Foreign Minister Jorge Castaneda and the Speakers of the two Houses of Parliament. On 26 April, she will make an official visit to Chile, where she will have talks with President Ricardo Lagos, Foreign Minister Soledad Alvear and the Speakers of the Houses. Ms. Fontaine will deliver the closing speech of the 15th EU/Latin America Inter-Parliamentary Conference, bringing together representatives from the EP and of the Parlatino (that brings together members of the parliaments of the 22 Latin American States), which opens in Valparaiso on 23 April, with the participation of Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and the Speaker of the Parlatino, Beatriz Paredes. The main topics will be: - the role of the media in democratic systems; - drugs and international organised crime; - globalization and social risks. The European co-rapporteurs will be Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, Antonio Seguro, Antonio Di Pietro. The first session of this type was held in 1974.
