Brussels, 20/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission approved an intervention plan for EUR 32 million to answer the humanitarian needs in Tanzania, country which hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa. For thirty years, Tanzania welcomes many people fleeing conflicts in neighbouring countries, and presently more than half a million refugees - including more than 370,000 from Burundi and 110,00 from the Congo - are located in 14 camps in the west of the country, details a Communiqué from the European Commission. The Communiqué adds that this number, given the continuing instability in the region, will probably remain high in the near future. The plan will be carried out thanks to close cooperation between the ECHO humanitarian office and several partners (UN High Commission for Refugees, UNICEF, World Food Programme, Red Cross), and will include actions in terms of food aid, shelter, health, hygiene, communal services and environmental protection.
