11/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - The French Senate has called on the French Government to strive to speed up and strengthen the process for creating Eurojust, the future judicial co-operation unit. The senators are calling for Eurojust to be assigned an "operational role for cross-border investigations covered by its field of competence ", for " Eurojust's role as an independent and collegial judicial unit" to be asserted, for an examination to be made of the "scope for allowing Eurojust to scrutinise police co-operation activities in the EU in due course" and for "'Eurojust to become an authority for making proposals to improve the fight against organised cross-border crime ". The Senate also calls for the organisation of a Convention comprising national and European parliamentarians and representatives of governments and the European Commission so as to «consider, in the light of matters coming within the scope of Eurojust, the conditions for harmonising criminal laws and creating a European public Ministry ".
