06/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - Commander Ahmad Shah Massoud was received in Brussels, on Friday, by High Representative for CFSP Javier Solana and by the Director of the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), Costanza Adinolfi. The Commission's spokesman pointed out that, if Mr Massoud were not received at political level by a member of the Commission it was because there was a timetable problem, with Messrs Prodi, Patten and Nielson all being away on Friday afternoon. EUROPE, however, has reason to believe that the Commission, which approves the political recognition and solidarity shown to Mr Massoud by the European Parliament (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.3) and the Council, preferred to be cautious in order not to endanger the NGO personnel who are on Afghan territory working to contribute to EU humanitarian aid.
