Parliament demands respect of freedom of religion

Strasbourg, 23/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - By adopting a resolution on the situation in Turkmenistan last week, the European Parliament calls on the Turkmenistan authorities to: - proceed with a reform of the legal system; - respect the principle of the freedom of religion; - release those held for their beliefs. Parliament also urges the European Commission to monitor the human rights situation in the country and step up the TACIS programme for the establishment of democracy in Turkmenistan.
