London, 20/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, the Secretary to the Foreign Office, Robin Cook said, without providing details at this stage, that the United Kingdom and the United States were considering a review of sanctions against Iraq to make them more effective.
According to the British press, which states that Robin Cook had discussed the issue in Washington with the Secretary of State Colin Powell, it would be a question of easing the sanctions affecting the Iraqi population to favour "smart sanctions", better targeted against Saddam Hussein's military arsenal.
Robin Cook should be setting out London's ideas on the subject at the General Affairs Council, to be held in Brussels on 26 February.
