European Parliament hearing of major witnesses on the use of depleted uranium

Strasbourg, 12/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - The GUE/NGL Group (European United Left/Nordic Greens) is organising, on Tuesday 16 January, on the fringe of the European Parliament session in Strasbourg, a hearing of "key witnesses" on the Balkans syndrome.

The participants will be able to listen to the accounts of Abraham Béhar, President of the international association "Médecins pour la Prévention de la Guerre Nucléaire"; Falco Accame, President of the "Victimes dans les Forces Armées" association and former NATO officer; Pekka Haavisto, co-author of the report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on the dangers of depleted uranium; Carlo Gubitosa, national secretary to the "Peace Link" network; Athanassios Geranios, Professor at the University of Athens in the nuclear physics department; and Christine Abdelkrim, journalist and author of the book "A Clean Dirty War".

The GUE/NGL Group has now called for immediate cessation of the manufacture and use of weapons tipped with depleted uranium. It also requests that Javier Solana, NATO Secretary General at the time of the facts under incrimination and currently High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the EU, come and explain the situation next week before the European Parliament. This desire was shared by all the representatives of the political groups during the meeting of the Conference of Presidents (see other article on page F).
