19/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Protestant Bishop of Bavaria, Dr. Johannes Friedrich welcomed the proclamation of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights in Nice, while regretting that its preamble "does not explicitly refer to God, contrary, for example, to the Fundamental Law of the Federal Republic", says a press release from the CSU member of the EP Ingo Friedrich, member of the Convention to have drawn up the Charter. However, Bishop Friedrich notes with satisfaction that the Charter does, in its preamble, allude to the "geistig-religios" heritage common to Europeans (Indeed, the German translation differs from the text in other languages, which refers to "spiritual" heritage, without any reference to religion, especially following France's explicit rejection: Ed.).
