New Directive "Waste Incineration" formally adopted

Brussels, 28/11/2000 (Agence Europe) - The new Directive from the Parliament and Council establishing very strict Community rules for the incineration of dangerous waste and those of non-dangerous waste is adopted. The approval from the Parliament, of the joint draft to which the two institution had reach on 11 October following a conciliation process (see EUROPE of 19 October, p.12) in fact allowed for the formal adoption of a text that will lead to a significant fall in emission of several pollutants from the EU: acid gases such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulphur dioxides (SO2), hydrogen chloride (HCI) and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury. This Directive will also enable to tackle the pollution of marine and fresh water ecosystems thanks to the monitoring of wastewater from waste incineration operation. EUROPE recalls that this new Directive has as aim to avoid or, when it is technically feasible, to reduce the negative effects on the environment and human health, of incineration operation known for being sources of air, soil, surface and underground water pollution. It will remove the failings of the existing legislation and merge them by replacing the provisions present dispersed in several Directive (Directive 89/369/EC and 89/429/EEC on non dangerous municipal waste, Directive 94/7/EC on dangerous waste).
