Brussels, 31/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Conference of peripheral maritime regions of Europe (CPMR) and the French regions of Brittany and the Loire country are organising the 2 and 3 November in Brest a conference on the prevention of maritime catastrophes in Europe. This conference is aimed at putting pressure for the establishment of a "true maritime accident prevention policy". Representatives from European regions, EU institutions, professionals from maritime transport and research centres will debate, on Thursday and Friday, the drafting and implementation of such a policy. Fernando de Esteban deputy Director General for Energy and Transport will present the European Commission positions and Christian Serradji, Director of maritime affairs at the French Transport Ministry, those of the Presidency. The Conference is symbolically organised in Brittany as, underline the organisers, "the tragedy of the Erika off the coast of Brittany cruelly brought to light the failings of the organisation of maritime safety at a European and world level.
