Brussels, 31/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - The CIUS (Committee of industrial users of sugar) that federates at the European level the national sugar user associations (350,000 employees and 70% of the sugar consumption) reiterated its desire for a reform of the common market organisation for sugar that enables to reduce sugar prices and confirms its undertaking to pass on the benefits of reduced costs to consumers of which the food processing companies would be the first to benefit. The CUIS condemns the attitude of certain Member States that spoke during the last Agriculture Council, in favour of the reform (see EUROPE of 25 October, p.7). The CUIS brings its support to the Commission proposal, in particular with regards to the abolition of the storage system, the measures aiming to reinforce competition and the undertaking to carry out a more in-depth reform in 2003.
