Strasbourg, 31/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - With its adoption of the report by Greek Socialist Anna Karamanou, the European Parliament regretted the lack of balance in the Action Plan for Albania and the neighbouring region, the fundamental objective of which seems to be to stem emigration to EU countries. The EP voiced regret over the confusion made between asylum seekers, socio-economic immigrants and persons in transit and called for the setting into place of an integrated strategy combining penalties and prevention (strengthening of Albania's institutions, support for efforts to combat corruption and crime, etc.). Parliament recommended that Italy and Greece become more closely involved in the dialogue between European officials and Albanian national and local authorities.
