Brussels, 02/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - To put an end to the growing pressure that certain human activities (tourism, industry, fishing fish farming) exercise on the natural environment, fauna and flora and the social fabric of the Union's coastal areas, the European Commission is proposing a Community strategy for integrated coastal zone management. The communication adopted for that purpose, on the initiative of Margot Wallstrom, European Commissioner for the environment, with the backing of Michel Barnier (regional policy) recommends informed, coordinated and complementary action by all levels of public authorities

(local, national, Community) and the involvement of all the stakeholders who use and manage coastal zones. Thirty-eight specific actions have been set out. So as to encourage Member States to draw up their own national strategies, the Commission has also adopted for their attention a draft recommendation to the Council and European Parliament setting out the direction to take and concrete tools for the sustainable development of the EU's coastal areas.
