Brussels, 22/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Party of the European Socialists (PES) is organising, next Monday in Bern, a conference for launching a counter-attack on the development of extreme right populism in Europe. The round table will discuss what strategy should be adopted to counter the growing support for Jörg Haider's party in Austria and Christoph Blocher's party in Switzerland. Discussion will also cover the links between the extreme right and the Euro-scepticism which nurtures it. The president of the PES Party, German Social Democrat Rudolf Scharping, Spanish President of the PES Group at the European Parliament, Enrique Baron, Vice-President of the Swiss National Council Moritz Leuenberger, and President of the Austrian Parliament Heinz Fischer are to take part in the conference.
