Romano Prodi met Serb opposition leader, Zoran Dindjic

Brussels, 22/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, met, Thursday in Brussels, the President of the Serb Democratic Party, Zoran Djindjic. He reminded him of the efforts deployed by the EU to support the Serb population and the democratic opposition. Mr. Prodi also called on the opposition parties to unit in view of the next elections. After having underlined that the European Council in Feira noted that all the western Balkan Countries are potential EU accession countries, he reasserted that it is the Belgrade regime who continues to prevent the Federal Yugoslav Republic from joining Europe. "It will be welcomed with an open heart as soon as a democratic government is in place," he added.
