Brussels, 22/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - Regarding information on the likely blocking of access to the Brenner Pass (between Austria and Italy), the European Commission welcomed the smooth implementation by Austria of the "rapid intervention mechanism" established end 1998 by the Fifteen to eliminate barriers to the free movement of goods in the single market. "On 9 June, the Austrian authorities informed the Commission of the demonstration held by ecologists ("Transitforum Austria Tirol") which will block access to the Brenner motorway on 23 and 24 June (…) and, on 19 June, we received information from Austria on the measures that will be taken", stated the spokesman for European Commissioner for the Internal Market. Vienna mainly gave the times when the motorway would be closed, as well as the alternative routes in Austria or transiting through France and Switzerland. This information has been diffused to the other Member States by the associations of drivers and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.
