Brussels, 08/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) welcomes the inclusion of a provision on the right of asylum in the draft Charter of Fundamental Rights, but calls for the absolute respect of the principle of no turning back to a country where the person concerned could be at risk. Ecre proposes the following article: "Everyone has the right to asylum in the European Union, consistent with the rules of the Geneva Convention of 28 July 1951 and the Protocol of 31 January 1967 relating to the status of refugees and other international human rights instruments for the protection of refugees. No Member State shall expel or return a refugee in any manner whatsoever to the frontiers of territories where his life or freedom would be threatened".
