Bourlanges regrets EPP has changed its attitude towards Austrian Conservatives

Brussels, 08/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - "I personally regret the decision whereby the EPP has changed its attitude towards the Austrian Conservatives", said French Christian Democrat Jean-Louis Bourlanges in a press release. He notes that "although it is true the current Austrian government has to date not taken any decision that can be construed as a threat to human rights and democracy, and although polls seem to show the strategy of the Austrian Chancellor appears to be resulting in a certain marginalisation of the ÖVP, it is, to say the least, too early to draw the consequences that EPP leaders have come to". He went on to add: "This said, the pretence of indignation on the part of the Socialists is particularly shocking in so far as they have never denounced the very grave and dishonest compromises made by Chancellor Kreisky with the Austrian nazis, and in that they continue to govern Carinthia in alliance with Mr Haider's party, under the latter's presidency. If one wants to give lessons of morality, then was must be irreproachable. This is far from true as far as the European Socialists are concerned".
