Maintenance of quality and reputation of Rioja wine justifies requiring it to be bottled in the region of production

Luxembourg, 17/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - The action brought by Belgium on the subject of the Spanish ban on using the designation "Rioja" for wine exported in bulk was rejected by the Court of Justice. The Court notes that there could be justification for the ruling of impediment to the free movement of goods if there is the need to safeguard the quality and reputation of a product which bears a designation of origin.
