Strasbourg, 17/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by German Social Democrat Lissy Gröner, the European Parliament approved the joint draft decision reached after "conciliation" with the Council, establishing the Community action programme "Youth". The EP stresses that the system adopted for the social protection of young people taking part in the programme represents substantial progress compared to the previous programmes. The Parliament considers that the budget of EUR 520 million is acceptable (although the Commission had initially proposed 765 million which the Council then brought down to 490 million), for the seven years 2000-2006, as long as the possibility of revision is introduced, with full EP participation, at the time of enlargement.
