Parliament calls for measures for selling wood fallen in storms end December

Strasbourg, 17/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption by 41 votes in favour and 7 abstentions of a resolution on the economic consequences that recent storms will have on the forestry industry in Europe, the European Parliament invited the Commission and Member States to proceed as soon as possible to market regulation of wood European-wide in order to organise the exploitation and priority selling of wood which fell during the December storms on the internal market. It called on the Commission to request derogation from the WTO to authorise the granting of exceptional financial aid to transport towards third countries, mainly for the most fragile wood which requires rapid use and outlets. The Parliament also requests that reforestation policy be carried out with respect to local features, diversity of ecosystems, the forestry-cynegetic balance and the quality of rural landscapes, and by diversifying the outlets for the wood industry.
