13/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - Following the systematic use of the name "Macedonia" in the report adopted last week by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (see EUROPE of 12 April, p.6), a representative of the Greek Foreign Ministry specified that this does not bring into question the official name currently given to the "former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia" (FYROM). The term "Macedonia" was used in a spirit of compromise, in the knowledge that a footnote specifies that it aims to make the text easier to read and does not mean the term is officially recognised by the Assembly. Progress with a view to cooperation and the important development of Greek investment in Macedonia allow us to hope that both patties will reach an equitable solution in the near future.
