Brussels, 06/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - Eurochambres supports the European Union's firm stance in its bilateral negotiations with China, especially on the issue of foreign direct investments (FDI). The Sino-European agreement on China's accession to the World Trade Organisation is considered by European entrepreneurs as "highly desirable, but not at any price", the association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry stipulates. The volume of European investments in China still being relatively low, entrepreneurs are "keen to see progress on the promotion of European FDI". Nevertheless, Eurochambers emphasises, the agreement will have to provide for "sound conditions for fair trade", as well as a "clear and realistic" timing by China for the implementation of its commitments. According to the Association, the conclusion of such an agreement could be the signal for a "rapid relaunch" of the new WTO negotiating round.
