THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/institutional reform

The IGC will review the work of the Preparatory Group and extension of qualified majority voting At ministerial level

Brussels, 06/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - On April 10 the Intergovernmental Conference for reforming the EU Treaty will hold a meeting of EU Foreign Ministers at 11: 00 a.m., chaired by Jaime Gama and attended by the President of the European Parliament, Nicole Fontaine, and the President of the Commission, Romano Prodi, (together with Dimitri Tstatsos, MEP, Elmar Brok, MEP, and European Commissioner Michel Barnier).

Participants at this short meeting will assess the work carried out by the Preparatory Group chaired by Francisco Seixas da Costa and will bring up the subject of the timetable for the second phase of the Group's talks (five meetings of the Group have been planned to date in the run-up to the European Summit of Santa Maria da Feira on June 19-20). Ministers are expected to take stock of work on extending qualified majority voting, which seems to be progressing more smoothly than the negotiations over the new weighting of votes at the Council and the future composition of the European Commission (see yesterday's EUROPE, p. 3).
