Parliament indignant about terrorist ETA assassinations

Brussels, 02/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - Wednesday's plenary session had been opened with a declaration from EP President Nicole Fontaine on the recent assassination, by ETA, of the spokesperson for the Socialist Party at the regional parliament and his body-guard. All the MEPs who took the floor condemned such acts of terrorism. The most heartrending evidence was given by Spanish Socialist Barbara Dührkop Dührkop, who recalled that her husband, who was a senator at the time, was the first Basque politician to be killed by the ETA while she was pregnant with their last child (in spontaneous ovation, the MEPs got to their feet to applaud her). There was just one discordant note. Koldo Gorostiaga Atxalandabaso, unattached member originating from the Basque country, affirmed, speaking in English as usual, that during the ETA truce (now broken) there was only one victim to the violence and that was a representative of ETA.
