02/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - Prof. Faruk Zen, Director of Zentrum für Türkeistudien at Essen University, affirmed during a Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung lecture in Brussels that Turkey would, on the basis of the 1998 EU budget, receive as a member of the EU EURO 3.57 for every euro that it pays into the Union's coffers. In addition, it would be entitled to have 800-1200 European officials, estimates Prof. Zen, who said he felt certain Turkey will be a full member of the EU within ten to fifteen years from now. He noted, however, that Ankara still has a long way to go, and, on the political level, spoke of the need to carry out "drastic correction" of the "dominant role of the military" and of the party regime (in no other country worldwide, he said, have there been as many political parties banned over recent years as in Turkey) and, at the economic level, the reduction of inflation (which stands at 65%) and inequality (20% of the population has over 57.4 of national income).
