Brussels, 02/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a letter written this Thursday to the Portuguese Prime Minister and President of the European Council Antonio Guterres, the President of UNICE (European employers) Georges Jacobs wrote that his organisation fully shares the views expressed in the Portuguese document aimed at the Lisbon Summit titled "Employment, Economic reforms and Social Cohesion - towards a Europe based on innovation and knowledge" (see EUROPE Documents Nº 2171-72). This is notably with regard to the objectives aiming to increase the employment levels. President Jacobs turns Mr. Guterres's attention towards some points that for UNICE are high priorities: 1) key strategic objectives must be improved and increase the economic and structural reforms as the EU's structural reform is presently an "orphan"; 2) Europe is a world leader in mobile communications but extremely behind in other fields which are part of the information revolution, with significant consequences for economic growth and employment; 4) The European attitude toward enterprise and innovation must be rethought, notably through a better balance between risks and entrepreneur investments, notable SMEs; 5) the EU urgently needs to have more workers; 6) furthermore the links between education and employment training policies need to be tightened.
