Brussels, 01/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Euro-Mediterranean association agreement between the EU and Morocco came into force on Wednesday, after a particularly long ratification procedure (it had been signed in February 1996). At the same time, the Council approved an "exchange of letters" which modifies certain annexes, at a request from Morocco which hoped to speed up the opening of its market to certain European products, and to slow it down for others. A delegation from the European Commission is to go to Morocco to examine a first group of projects spread out over three years, to be financed under financial cooperation as foreseen in the Agreement. Next year, both parties are expected to begin review of the regime for trade in agricultural produce. The new agreement has no influence on the eventual negotiation of a new fisheries agreement.
