Brussels, 01/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - European Commission Pascal Lamy is waiting for a signal from Beijing to go there and sign a "real" bilateral agreement on the conditions for China's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). "I do not want to negotiate publicly or, worse, via the press, but I should like to emphasise that I remain ready to go to Beijing at the drop of a hat when the Chinese send a signal that there is a real deal in the offing", said the Commissioner for Community trade policy, on Tuesday before the EU Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Belgium. Mr. Lamy explained the "disappointing" outcome of last week's technical negotiations by the fact that there had simply been "too many issues left on the table to clinch a deal". "Slow, incremental progress" was nevertheless made, he confirmed.
