THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/turkey

01/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The State criminal investigation court in Diyarbakir has announced the provisional release of the three mayors of Hadep (Kurd Nationalist Party of People's Democracy) - Feridun Celik, Mayor of Diyarbakir; Selim Ozalp, Mayor of Siirt; and Feyzullah Karaaslan, Mayor of Bingol - who had been accused of supporting the PKK, arrested and divested of their functions. The European Parliament President Nicole Fontaine, above all, had launched an appeal for the release of the three mayors. Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Chair of the EP Delegation for relations with the Turkish Parliament, had also denounced their arrest (see EUROPE of 23 February, p.8, and 24 February, p.6). Mr Cohn-Bendit, supported by the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs, also called on the Council and Commission to make declarations on Turkey during the plenary to be held from 13 to 17 March in Strasbourg. The Conference of Presidents, of the EP, will decide next week whether to include this issue or not on the agenda.
