The Financial Times is reporting that the French group ALCATEL (telecoms equipment) is close to a deal for acquisition of the ailing Canadian group NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS. The transaction is said to be worth around USD 6.5 billion and would give ALCATEL a foothold on the North and South American markets, where NEWBRIDGE earned around half its turnover.
