Brussels, 25/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - "Chinese officials have come to Brussels to negotiate seriously", said the Commission spokesman on Tuesday after a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Wu and Commissioner Lamy to discuss Chinese accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). "It is a fortunate coincidence that the technical negotiations are taking place at the time of this visit", he added, making a distinction between the two processes. A delegation led by Deputy Trade Minister Long Yongtu presented to Hans-Friedrich Beseler, Director General for Traade, Beijing's answers to the concessions requested by the Europeans, on the fringe of the Seattle Conference, to improve access to the Chinese market (see EUROPE of 22/01). The technical negotiations, which continue on Wednesday, were "constructive", said the spokesman, who said only that the Chinese document covered customs duties on imports of goods and services. Asked whether a bilateral agreement would be concluded this week, Mr Lamy said: "We are not there yet."
