Brussels, 25/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioner Pascal Lamy, who is responsible for trade, formally and categorically dismissed the allegations made by a British weekly whereby he is said to have prepared a secret trade-off deal with the US involving accepting imports of US food containing GMOs in exchange for a US commitment to drop its request that the EC should cut farm subsidies under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). This is "pure nonsense", he said regarding the article that appeared at the weekend in The Independent on Sunday. His spokesman, Anthony Gooch, firmly denied making the statements attributed to a "spokesman for Mr Lamy".
