25/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission expects that the acquisition of 25% of the capital of Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) by Electricité de France will be notified to it. Supplying more than 10% of electricity in Germany, EnBW is the fourth largest German electricity company, with a turnover of EUR 4.1 billion. The agreement (which should be examined by the Baden-Württemberg finance committee) will be scrutinised by the European competition services from the merger point of view but probably with regard to State aid also, as EDF is a public enterprise. The spokesman for the Energy Commissioner recalls for his part that the European rules on "reciprocity" decreed in the context of liberalisation of the energy market do not apply to mergers.
