Council to hold exchange of views on Monday on timeliness and nature of sanctions against Russia - Commission awaits ministerial debate for making proposals

Brussels, 20/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - Next Monday, 24 January, in its first session of the year 2000, the General Affairs Council will above all hold a debate on the attitude it should have towards Russia concerning the situation in Chechnya. The foreign ministers must, in particular, examine the implementation of measures envisaged by the Helsinki Summit on 10/11 December, which had in principle decided to:

re-examine the implementation of EU "common strategy" towards Russia;
