THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/death penalty

20/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Parliament, Nicole Fontaine, has written to George Bush Jr, Governor of Texas, to ask for clemency for David Hicks, condemned to death in that state and due to be executed on 21 January. The appeal is based on humanitarian reasons and on the European Parliament's opposition in principle to the death penalty, recalled Mrs Fontaine.
