At the end of the ‘Africa Days’ initiative (see EUROPE 13899/6) on Thursday, 2 July, the S&D group in the European Parliament announced its vision for a “progressive” EU–Africa partnership, which intends to surpass previous models of cooperation by emphasising mutual respect and equality between partners as well as promoting initiatives originating from African societies themselves.
In order to make this renewed partnership a reality, the Social Democrat family in the European Parliament has made 10 commitments, among which are forging alliances with progressive forces in Africa, including within civil society, trade unions, and youth movements; supporting transformative approaches led by African societies; engaging more with the diasporas established in Europe; fighting for a fairer financial system by ensuring effective taxation of multinationals, combatting illicit financial flows, seeking fair solutions for managing public debt, and increasing African representation in international financial bodies; improving access to financing for development and for the fight against climate disruption; promoting a ‘green’ transition that benefits as many people as possible and enables skills and technologies to be shared; establishing sustainable value chains that benefit African communities; strengthening social justice and gender equality; and promoting decent work.
