EU Council revises 2026 fishing quotas for several fish stocks

On Wednesday 1 July, the Council of the EU adopted a regulation amending certain total allowable catches (TACs) for 2026.

As regards the postponement of corrective measures (cod, haddock and whiting, sole and plaice), their application, initially scheduled for 1 June, has been postponed to 1 November, owing to delays by the United Kingdom in its internal procedures.

As regards mackerel, a reserve of 1,495 tonnes has been allocated to Russia in the international waters of the NEAFC area, with EU vessels prohibited from transhipping or refuelling Russian vessels exceeding that quota and from landing or providing port services in the EU for Russian mackerel caught beyond that limit. The anchovy TAC (areas 9 and 10) is set at 16,323 t (from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027), of which 14,691 t for Portugal. As for northern prawn, the 17,000 t planned for a Norway-EU transfer are being redistributed among the Member States. The sprat TAC is 67,666 tonnes (from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027).
