09/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – On the occasion of World Oceans Day (8 June), the NGOs Oceana and MedReAct published a report warning about the effects of bottom trawling on deep Mediterranean ecosystems. According to this independent study, these destructive practices weaken marine biodiversity and reduce the capacity of the seabed to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The two organisations are calling on the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) to extend the deep-sea trawl ban, currently set at 1,000 metres, to at least 800 metres. This decision, they believe, would have a scientific justification and would help ensure compliance with international commitments. Link to the report: https://aeur.eu/f/m9b (LC)
