FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS - SOCIETAL ISSUES / Fundamental rights

National human rights institutions concerned about erosion of civic and democratic space within EU

National human rights institutions (NHRIs) in the European Union note continuing pressure on the Rule of law, civic space and democratic processes in several Member States.

In its seventh annual report, published on Friday 5 June, the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) notes that, despite their ongoing commitment to protecting fundamental rights, the majority of NHRIs report growing difficulties, including a lack of resources, insufficient follow-up to their recommendations by public authorities and, in some cases, disinformation campaigns targeting them.

The report also highlights a deterioration in civil society space, notably due to attacks against human rights defenders, insufficient funding and the criminalisation of certain associative activities.

Moreover, ENNHRI sounds the alarm about the effects of disinformation on democratic systems and notes several failings in national legislative processes.

In view of these findings, the network is calling on Member States and the European institutions to strengthen democratic safeguards and support for civil society.
