France, Austria and Italy push for mandatory labelling of origin of agricultural products

At the Agriculture Council on Tuesday 26 May in Brussels, France, Austria and Italy will once again ask the European Commission to generalise the labelling of the country of origin of agricultural products (see EUROPE 13798/6).

The Ministers of these three countries believe that farmers are facing growing competition from imports, whose production is often subject to less stringent standards than those in force within the European Union.

These three countries will therefore ask the Commission to propose a revision of Regulation 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers in order to strengthen the requirement to indicate origin across the Union and extend it to as many food products as possible.

Milk. Lithuania will call, under another “other business” item, for “urgent and coordinated action at European Union level” in order to avoid a further deterioration in the dairy sector, according to a note from the country (https://aeur.eu/f/lz7 ).

It will ask Commission to activate private storage aid immediately for cheeses and to mobilise support under the agricultural crisis reserve in order to help dairy farms (see EUROPE 13840/3). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
