As the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly approaches in September, Members of the European Parliament called on Wednesday 20 May for multilateralism to be safeguarded and strengthened.
In the report by Andrey Kovatchev (EPP, Bulgarian), which they adopted by 369 votes in favour, 160 against and 112 abstentions, Members of the European Parliament underline the essential role of multilateral organisations in conflict resolution, global governance and responding to major global challenges. “A stable, reliable and fair multilateral system, along with multilateral forums such as the United Nations, are essential to guaranteeing peace and security”, the Members believe.
At a time when other global actors are disengaging, Members of the European Parliament call on the European Union to assume greater responsibility for supporting, financing and strengthening multilateral organisations, including the UN, and to strengthen cooperation with its partners in order to promote an effective multilateral order. Members of the European Parliament call for an ambitious reform of the United Nations system, particularly the Security Council, in order to make it more effective and inclusive, and better reflect current global realities. The European Parliament also wants the European Union to obtain a permanent seat on the Security Council, in addition to the seat already held by France.
The text also calls on the EU to step up its efforts and fully support the independence and impartiality of other international bodies, notably the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice.
