European Parliament approves Canada’s participation in European SAFE loan instrument

20/05/2026 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament approved by a large majority (466 votes in favour, 169 against and 14 abstentions), on Wednesday 20 May, Canada’s participation in the European loan instrument SAFE, which will help 19 Member States increase military expenditure by up to €150 billion (see EUROPE 13777/20). In return, Ottawa will have to pay a financial contribution of €10 million.
