EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Budget

MEPs set their sights on EU’s 2027 budget

On Tuesday 28 April, the European Parliament adopted by a comfortable majority (389 votes in favour, 191 against, 75 abstentions) its political guidelines for preparing the European Union’s budget for 2027, the final year of the 2021-2027 Multiannual Financial Framework.

Apart from the adoption of a few amendments from the EPP group, MEPs have adopted the position of the Committee on Budgets (BUDG) established at the beginning of March (see EUROPE 13822/19). They rejected numerous amendments from the ECR and PfE groups, which were particularly concerned about the EU’s level of debt and called for an investigation into European funding for environmental NGOs.

According to the European Parliament, the 2027 budget must support European competitiveness, improve economic, social and territorial cohesion, and strengthen the EU’s security and defence capabilities.

Support for the EU’s eastern border regions, which are vulnerable to major economic and security pressures, and for farmers in Member States neighbouring Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, is another priority for MEPs.
