A new edition of the European Green Capital Award and European Green Leaf Award has been launched, the European Commission announced on Thursday 23 April.
17 cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants and 10 medium-sized cities are in the running for the 2028 titles, rewarding the most ambitious urban policies in terms of the environment: Aalborg (Denmark), Bielsko-Biała (Poland), Brescia (Italy), Gdańsk (Poland), Košice (Slovakia), Lugo (Spain), Mataró (Spain), Miskolc (Hungary), Murcia (Spain), Nîmes (France), Podgorica (Montenegro), Porto (Portugal), Rome (Italy), Setúbal (Portugal), Ternopil (Ukraine), Terrassa (Spain) and Zaragoza (Spain).
The 10 cities eligible for the European Green Leaf 2028 award are: Ávila (Spain), Benidorm (Spain), Chiclana de la Frontera (Spain), Errenteria (Spain), Esplugues de Llobregat (Spain), Esposende (Portugal), Estarreja (Portugal), Mafra (Portugal), Sant Joan Despí (Spain) and Vratsa (Bulgaria).
The applications will be assessed by a panel of seven independent experts, and the list of finalists will be announced at the beginning of July.
The finalists will then defend their applications before an international jury chaired by the European Commission on 7 and 8 October. The 2028 winners will be announced on 8 October 2026 in Guimarães, the current European Green Capital.
