27/03/2026 (Agence Europe) – The Member States of the European Union granted nationality to almost 1.2 million people in 2024, 11.6% more than in 2023, according to Eurostat’s latest annual report, published on Friday 27 March. This increase is part of a long-term trend, since the overall number of naturalisations has jumped by 54.5% since 2014. The report states that Germany (24.5%), Spain (21.4%) and Italy (18.5%) account for the majority of applications that have been accepted. Third-country nationals account for 88% of beneficiaries, with Syrian nationals in first place (110,100), followed by Moroccan (97,100) and Albanian (48,000) nationals. While Germany dominates in terms of volume, Sweden has the highest naturalisation rate in the EU, with 7.5 citizenships granted for every 100 foreign residents, a rate that is well ahead of Italy (4.1).
