On Thursday 26 February, the European Commission announced €63 million in humanitarian aid to support the most vulnerable communities in Somalia, affected by conflict and population displacement, as well as increasing drought and soaring food prices.
“6.5 million people (around one in three Somalis) [are] facing hunger and an estimated 1.85 million children under the age of five [are] at risk of acute malnutrition,” according to the Commission press release.
Priority will be given to essential integrated health and nutrition services, including treatment of severe and acute malnutrition, emergency financial assistance, access to water and sanitation, protection and emergency education.
With this new funding, the EU has provided more than €750 million in humanitarian aid to Somalia since 2017. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
