On Wednesday 25 February, Apóstolos Tzitzikóstas, European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, convened a second strategic dialogue with senior representatives from the tourism and transport sectors, to contribute to the development of the future EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy (see EUROPE 13795/20).
The aim is to jointly identify the challenges, opportunities and key actions needed to support the development of the EU tourism sector and better prepare it for future challenges. The Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER), in particular, has highlighted three major mobility-related challenges that the future strategy will have to address: decarbonisation, overtourism and data fragmentation.
At the same time, a number of organisations from the EU tourism ecosystem met in Brussels for the first time with signatories to the code of conduct for online ratings and reviews of tourist accommodation. This code, drawn up in July 2025 by stakeholders in the tourism ecosystem and initiated by the EU, aims to improve the transparency and reliability of online reviews for consumers and businesses in the tourism and accommodation sector (see EUROPE 13699/10).
“Trust is the currency of tourism. By signing this Code of Conduct, we ensure that every review, every rating, reflects genuine experiences - benefiting travellers, businesses, and the European tourism ecosystem as a whole”, said the Commissioner in a press release.
