Published on 19 February, an audit that the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) conducted in China in November 2025 has concluded that the official controls on poultry and rabbit meat marketed within the EU are not adequate.
According to the report, “The certification is compromised by the missing or/and unreliable traceability information, by the absence of adequate segregation procedures for EU and non-EU products, and by the absence of official evidence ascertaining the compliance of meat and meat products intended to be exported to the EU”.
European inspectors noted serious failures in slaughterhouses, notably concerning the stunning of animals and compliance with hygiene rules.
The audit uncovered shortcomings in the detection of nonconformities and in officials’ training.
Weaknesses have also been noted in how European sanitary alerts (RASFF notifications) are handled. The European Commission is calling for rapid corrective measures [to be taken].
